Lake Kariba: Africa's best kept secret! Lake Kariba is nearly
300 kilometres long and the largest man-made lake or reservoir in the world. Its 2,000
kilometres of shoreline offers a spetacular variety of estuaries that spill into the
surrounding bush. The entire region abounds with bird life and large game species such as Elephant and Hippo.
Lake Kariba is a paradise of Africa's natural splendour.
The Kariba Dam makes this all possible. Known as one of the greatest engineering feats undertaken by man, this immense
project began in 1950 to accommodate the power needs that new industrial growth would
require. The immense project to stop-up the powerful Zambezi river began.
Completed in 1959, the Dam stands at almost 130 metres high and spans a length of over 1/2 kilometre with a berth
roadway, 12 metres thick. The electrical power output for the region is 1,180 million kilowatts per year.
